The sound installation created by artist Diren Demir through an open call started in 2020 with the pandemic, different people in different houses recorded sounds coming from “beyond the walls” in their living spaces all over the world. Installation collects the traces of life reflected on dozens of different walls in one wall. Although the quarantine process has created a huge change and fluctuation in human relations, our daily life and routine continued in different ways in our apartments, houses and rooms. New forms of communication have emerged from this era and it still exist. “Everyday life” has gained a broad definition.

Aiming to collect traces from everyday life and reflecting the reality of post-corona time, “Beyond the Wall” opens up space to question the fact that “walls” are the only thing that completely separates different lifes in different houses and exist as the closest witneses of our lifes. Transmittance now becomes a communication channel. All factors of family structure, forms of communication between ages or cases of domestic violence become symbols of this unilateral form of communication and are disclosured. Thus, the walls of separation are reconsidered in the new world as means of “establishing contact”.

The Beyond the Wall installation still continues to acquire data as a sound archive. Through the QR code placed on the wall, it is ensured that the audience also sends the recorded sounds behind the wall during the exhibition, so the archive continues to expand and the installation offers a telematic, interactive and participatory space.
