Ink and Mold on Canvas
Diren Demir
“The entropy of an object is a measure of the amount of energy which is unavailable to do work. “
Diren had to live in his grandmother’s garage at the age of 17 due to their family’s homophobia. Artist consider this as their very first exile. Many of Diren’s works were getting moldy due to the humidity inside of the garage. So artist then started to use mold itself as a material.
Diren uses the poetic simplicity of various images that evokes despair, past memories, broken relationships, or giving up. With the same technique, the artist talks about the abstract world of the law of entropy. Artworks in the exhibition are not only paintings but constantly changing motifes. Entropy still continues on the moldy surface of the images, thus it presents a durational form of art and directly archives the elapsed time itself.
